JPEG Encoder

A lossy image encoder, perhaps the most used image format world over.

Quality is lost to achieve smaller files, how much is lost is controlled by the quality scale on the encoder settings page.

All JPG images are 16M colors, a good starting point is Quality 3.

Extension: .jpg

Other JPEG Formats

dBpoweramp also includes a Jpeg 2000 and Jpeg XL encoder.

Jpeg 2000 uses the extension .jp2 and is a development on from jpeg, however compatibility is not universal.

More interesting is Jpeg XL, newer and royalty free. Existing jpeg files can be transposed to XL ([Transform JPEG to JPEG XL]), resulting in smaller file sizes, later the exact jpeg files can be returned ([Restore JPEG from JPEG XL]).

AVIF is the main competition to Jpeg XL.
